Commemorating 20 years of celebrating the music and musicians of West Virginia, The West Virginia Music Hall of Fame is debuting its Glotfelty Film Series, which will present a selection of music-based films with direct links to West Virginia.
The films are both educational and entertaining and will cover a wide range of artists, styles and approaches, according to a news release from the WVMHoF.
The series begins on Sunday, March 2, with a screening of “Young@Heart,†an award-winning documentary about a unique chorus made up of 80-plus-year-old performers.
“From the songs of The Clash, Sonic Youth and Talking Heads, to James Brown and Alan Toussaint, the film proves that the magic and power of music is ageless,†the news release stated.
“Young@Heart†will be shown at the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame’s Museum of Music in The ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä Town Center at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 2. Admission is “pay what you can.â€
Bob Cilman has directed the chorus since he founded it in 1982 and “creatively arranges a wide and unexpected variety of songs for a spirited, talented, and wonderful group of octogenarians.â€
Cilman will introduce the film and take questions following the screening. A special treat is a short performance by Raleigh County, West Virginia, native John Rinehart, a member of the chorus who will soon celebrate his 90th birthday.
Later in the month, The Glotfelty Film Series will bring its second film, “The Devil and Daniel Johnston,†to The Lewis Theatre in Lewisburg (7 p.m. Friday, March 28) and back to the WVMHoF’s West Virginia Museum of Music in The ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä Town Center (6 p.m. Saturday, March 29).
The documentary chronicles the music, art and troubled life of Daniel Johnston, who will be posthumously inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame with the class of 2025.
Admission to the Lewis Theatre screening is $15; the ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä screening is “pay what you can.â€
