It only took one visit to Google and a bit of elementary math to discover that the combined wealth of our country’s three tech giants is close to $1 trillion.
That’s not only a great deal of money but a cumulative amount of power, along with the ability to control most anything or anyone. This past presidential election has made that crystal clear. And if it isn’t clear to you, then it’s important to surmise that you are part of the problem, not part of the solution.
Hopefully, after witnessing the destruction that this administration has set in motion in such a very short time, we will scrutinize more closely than ever before those who seek to enact laws that affect every single one of us differently but with a most certain impact. We cannot allow the leaders of this country to ignore the needs of the marginalized among us, who find themselves tossed aside because they lack wealth and power and control.
The former do not have to concern themselves with crumbling infrastructure, rising costs of housing and food or the availability of quality health care and educational opportunities. They have their private planes, multiple residences, access to the best health providers, ample food and well-funded schools.
I don’t begrudge them any of these advantages, but I do expect and demand that they, at the very least, be cognizant of those who struggle to obtain them, at even the most essential levels. Is it too much to ask that each of us gets a piece of the pie that is generous enough to sustain us beyond mere survival?
If we don’t demand a certain level of scrutiny from our elected officials in future elections, then we have learned nothing from the devastating results of this past election. If we accept status quo, then we will have no one to blame but ourselves. If accountability continues to sit on the back burner, the wheels will keep turning in the same direction.
The seeds of indifference that have been planted will continue to grow with an unimaginable ferocity. Our worst fears are making their way into the bright light of day. Are you OK with that?
