No. 1 seed Bridgeport rolled to a 55-32 victory over No. 8 Elkins in the WVSSAC Class AAA boys basketball state tournament quarterfinals at the ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä Coliseum & Convention Center on Tuesday.
“First off, I want to congratulate and take my hat off to Elkins, coach [Amrit] Rayfield and his guys,†Bridgeport coach Dave Marshall said. “I have a ton of respect for them. They kind of made us grind and work. Credit to my guys that we just rolled up our sleeves and went to work, and we didn’t get excited.â€
The Indians led 9-4 after one quarter and then took a 26-12 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Bridgeport began to slowly pull away in the third period, leading 39-21 after three before increasing its edge to 24 points in the fourth stanza.

WESTSIDE 83, DODDRIDGE COUNTY 53: The Class AA No. 3 seed Renegades had the hot hand offensively to start off the tournament on Tuesday morning, hitting on 12 of 24 shots from beyond the arc.
Kaiden Vance led the way for Westside (17-5) with 26 points, going 6 of 8 from 3-point land.
“Just an amazing performance. The community support is off the charts right now. What they do has got everybody so excited,†Westside coach Nick Cook said. “These guys have been working hard and today they got the job done.â€
Defensively, the Renegades held Bulldogs center Jaden Solomon (9.5 ppg) scoreless, although he led No. 6 Doddridge County (20-5) with seven rebounds.
Behind Vance’s performance, Westside had balanced scoring as Colton Lester had 15 points, while Austin Bishop added 14 and Bryson Blankenship contributing 11 for the day.
The Renegades will play No. 2 Wheeling Central on Thursday at 11:15 a.m. in the semifinal round.

WHEELING CENTRAL 80, RITCHIE COUNTY 27: Things got out of hand quickly for the No. 7 seed Rebels (17-8) on Tuesday against No. 2 Wheeling Central in the Class AA quarterfinals.
“Coming in, I thought Ritchie County was really a decent team,†Maroon Knights coach Mel Stephens said. “They had a couple kids that could score. I just thought, for us to be successful, we had to try to control those guys and basically go out and do the stuff that we do on both ends.â€
Wheeling Central led 23-8 after one quarter, and the game snowballed even more for the Rebels in the second stanza as the Maroon Knights raced to a commanding 51-17 edge at halftime.
Eli Sancomb notched a double-double for the Maroon Knights with 22 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, while Tyler Dean tallied 21 points and went 5 for 5 from 3-point range.
Rhett Johnson paced the Rebels with 15 points, burying five triples. Isaac Hodges chipped in eight points for Ritchie County with nine rebounds and three blocks.
Wheeling Central (22-2) advances to Thursday’s semifinal at 11:15 a.m. against No. 3 Westside.
