BLACKSBURG, Va. — Marshall’s softball team, looking for a marquee Power Five win, hung a five-spot on Virginia Tech in the second inning on Wednesday.
The 13th-ranked Hokies, though, got two of them back in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead, and added on enough the rest of the way to hold off the Thundering Herd, 9-7.
Virginia Tech (37-9-1) blasted four home runs, including two by Cori McMillan, who went 4 for 4 with four runs batted in and three runs.
Addy Greene and Trinity Martin each also went deep for the Hokies.
Marshall (21-24) was seeking a third consecutive victory over the Hokies, after beating them in 2023 in Huntington and 2017 in Blacksburg. The Herd looked as though it may accomplish just that with a five-run second.
Down 4-0, Marshall quickly erased that deficit on Destiny Washington’s two-run single, Bella Gerlach’s RBI on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and Bub Feringa’s go-ahead two-run single.
But the Herd lead lasted only until McMillan’s next at-bat. In the bottom of the second inning, she connected on a two-run round-tripper to left.
Virginia Tech added two more runs in the third and another in the fifth. Marshall scored a run in both the fifth and sixth frames, but it wasn’t enough to draw even again.
Washington was 2 for 3 for Marshall. Kasia Parks scored two runs. Rielly Lucas hit a solo homer.
Feringa took the loss in the circle. She went 2 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs — five earned — as Marshall committed three errors. Feringa issued five walks. Savannah Rice finished up in relief.
Lyndsey Grein got the decision for Virginia Tech out of the bullpen. She worked the final five innings, allowing two runs — one earned — on three hits, with no walks and five strikeouts.
Martin was 2 for 4 and Greene scored three runs for Virginia Tech, which now leads the all-time series 9-6. It beat Marshall for the first time since 2013.
