Bogey’s BBQ & Grill owners Jay Nelson (left) and Andrew Ford (center) cut the ribbon to celebrate the opening of their new restaurant on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024, at the Capitol Market in ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä. They are surrounded by staff, guests and dignitaries.
Right to left, Zena Izaguirre of ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä, Jayden Keith of South ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä and Ramsie Monk of ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä were the first customers at the grand opening of Bogey's BBQ & Grill, Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024, at the Capitol Market in ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä.
hosted its grand opening Thursday, becoming the indoor-outdoor market’s newest restaurant — and its first new indoor tenant — in almost 10 years.
Bogey’s BBQ & Grill offers a twist on traditional barbecue. Co-owners and operators Andrew Ford and Jay Nelson have created a menu that honors classic barbecue traditions and focuses on cooking with wood.
“It’s all wood fire and grilled stuff,†he said. “Including our fire-roasted corn, fired tomatoes, our smoked turkey, it’s all based off of wood, so it’s a little bit different flavor.â€
Bogey’s is in a renovated space across from Holl’s Chocolates where the Fresh Seafood Company once occupied. The new restaurant has a long, patterned, wood-top counter, which wraps around an open-air kitchen with stainless-steel appliances and a small bar. They’ll be open 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. daily.
Belly up to the BBQ bar
Ford said Bogey’s also features salads, wraps, tacos and other menu items. Also of note is that Bogey’s at Capitol Market will serve alcohol.
Jaden Keith, 22, of South ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä, was one of the first to grab a seat at the bar.
“I came with my friends because I have tried their food at the Tornado location and it’s amazing,†said Keith, who tried the fried chicken on Thursday.
“It was juicy, tender,†he said. “And it was seasoned just right. I was impressed.â€
Keith said he was glad to see the new restaurant open at the market.
“ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä needs more food options, and this is something new and fresh in town,†he said.
Bogey’s history
Ford started the business about seven years ago.
“We’ve been best friends since high school and started at our original location ,†Ford said. “It’s been a great partnership.â€
Ford said while at the mac and cheese competition at the market last year, he noticed a space was going to be open.
“It just kind of popped in our head the idea that it might be a good fit for us,†he said.
Capitol Market officials said over 50 potential businesses applied to take the open spot.
Impact on Capitol Market
Evan Osborne, executive director at Capitol Market, said his team put a lot of thought into what new restaurant would be located at the market.
“This is a big day for us at the Capitol Market,†he said. “We were on a mission to make sure that whatever we put in here was not only going to be the best fit, but one that would also help serve the needs of our community. Not just feeding people, but helping Capitol Market continue to become a culinary destination.â€
Osborne said Bogey’s impact on the market includes complimenting other small businesses there, while also supporting them.
“We’re all about supporting small businesses and West Virginia farmers, and Andrew and Jay, the guys that are opening Bogey’s, lived and breathed that, and they were doing it before they got here,†he said. “From working with some of our corn producers here at the market to working with Ted at the Wine & Cheese Shop to help pair some some wines that are going to fit in nicely on the menu.â€
